About Me

Dr. Randall Nguyen is a board certified ophthalmologist who specialized in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the vitreous and retina.

At age 10, his family escaped by sea from Vietnam and immigrated to the United States. Through perseverance and dedication, Dr. Nguyen graduated in only three years with Magna Cum Laude honors in biology at the University of California at Irvine. Then, he went on and was awarded his medical degree from the highly prestigious the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, which has been consistently been ranked one of the nation’s top medical school by U.S. News and World Report. There, he researched at the internationally respected Wilmer Eye Institute.

After obtaining his MD degree, Dr. Nguyen returned to his family and home in California. He completed his medical internship at the University of California Los Angeles- St. Mary Medical Center. Dr. Nguyen was recognized as the Medical Intern of the Year for providing excellent comprehensive care for his patients, excelling as a clinician and being always helpful to his colleagues and staff.

Dr. Nguyen completed his ophthalmology residency the University of Southern California Doheny Eye Center, one of the top eye center, known for their diverse pathology and extensive surgical experience. Inspired by the sight saving role of retinal surgery and fascinated by the ever evolving technological advances of the specialty, Dr. Nguyen sought and completed his medical and surgical retina fellowship at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Eye Center. There, he trained with five different amazing retinal surgeons and benefitted from one of the busiest and highest surgical volume program in both Canada and the United States.

Since 2000, Dr. Nguyen has been a member of the South Coast Retina Center. His clinical expertise includes complex retinal detachment repair, diabetic retinopathy, macula holes, management of macular degeneration and other retinal disorders.

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, and Los Angeles County Medical Society.

Dr. Nguyen has published in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at numerous conferences. He was been active in several in national clinical trials. Dr. Nguyen believes strongly in helping community locally and abroad. He has participated in telemedicine diabetic retinal screenings of uninsured or indigent patients in the South Bay. He annually had been the volunteered physician for a local summer camp for disabled and at risk youths. In addition, he continued to mentor medical students interested in ophthalmology on rotation at his clinic. Internationally, he has performed eye surgeries for patients in Mexico and in remote areas such as Tanzania. Africa. Dr. Nguyen had also camped in the badlands of Montana to help paleontologist prospect, dig and preserved dinosaur fossils.

Despite all of his accomplishments, Dr. Nguyen always remind himself that the it is the person we treat and not just the disease. He believes in giving time, respect and his best effort to each patient- always. On occasion, even in these days of twitter and smartphones, Dr. Nguyen still makes old-fashioned personal house calls.

With his remaining time, Dr. Nguyen’s true passion and love are reserved for his amazing wife, Megan and his three never-a-dull moment, wonderful boys: Matthew, Jacob and Ethan.
