About

Constantinos Chrysostomou, M.D., has recently joined MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women's Hospital Long Beach bringing several years of experience in the establishment and advancement of cardiac critical care programs. Dr. Chrysostomou has helped establish several of the very first cardiac intensive care units at prominent children’s hospitals across the United States including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and most recently Nemours Children’s Hospital in Florida.

Dr. Chrysostomou is nationally and internationally recognized as a pioneer in the field of pediatric cardiac intensive care. He is the first to have extensively studied and subsequently assisted in the implementation of the routine use across the country of dexmedetomidine, a neurodevelopmentally safer sedative agent for children with cardiac disease. Dr. Chrysostomou is also responsible for the discovery of dexmedetomidine’s novel anti-arrhythmic properties. His breakthrough work on the treatment of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias was published in several high impact journals and has served as a landmark for other investigators.

Dr. Chrysostomou’s recruitment is just another indication of a major commitment by Miller Children's & Women's to build one of the best cardiac programs in Southern California. A state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is already in place and Dr. Chrysostomou serves as its medical director, leading a group of highly skilled providers in making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.
